Departures 2026/27

Snälltåget operates from southern Sweden to Jämtland and Härjedalen between 16 December 2026 and 2 May 2027.

How the train operates

The train departs from Malmö in the afternoon and calls at Lund. It then runs either via Småland and Östergötland (Hässleholm, Alvesta, Nässjö, Linköping and Norrköping) or via the west coast (Helsingborg, Halmstad and Göteborg-Mölndal) to Stockholm and Uppsala, arriving in the mountains the following morning.

Return journeys depart in the afternoon, arriving in Uppsala and Stockholm in the evening and at other stations the following morning.

Most departures are scheduled to match the most common changeover days in the mountains: Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We also offer a few departures for Monday or Friday changeovers.

From Undersåker

Snälltåget operates trains to the Swedish mountains from 17 December 2025 to 3 May 2026. Our departures are scheduled to match the most common accommodation changeover days: Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

New this season: We now also run via Gothenburg to the Jämtland and Härjedalen mountains!

Trains from Malmö via Stockholm to Jämtland and Härjedalen

Outbound from Malmö:

  • Wednesdays and Saturdays: 17 December 2025 – 2 May 2026 (except 24 and 31 December)
  • Extra departures: Sundays 21 and 28 December 2025, and 4 January 2026

The train stops at Malmö, Lund, Hässleholm, Alvesta, Nässjö, Linköping, Norrköping, Stockholm, and Uppsala, arriving in the mountains the following morning.

From Östersund, there are transfers to and from the ski areas in Vemdalen and Funäsfjällen on 21 and 28 December 2025, 4 January 2026, as well as Thursdays and Sundays from 26 February to 12 April 2026.

Destinations in Jämtland

Edsåsdalen
Edsåsdalen is a small mountain village in the southern Åre mountains, known for its peaceful atmosphere and easy access to nature. Here you will find family-friendly alpine skiing as well as excellent opportunities for cross-country and backcountry skiing. The surrounding mountain landscape offers wide open views and quiet trails away from the busiest resorts.

Trillevallen
Trillevallen is a classic mountain resort with a long tradition of skiing. It offers a friendly ski area with alpine slopes, extensive cross-country trails and great terrain for ski touring. The area is particularly popular with families and those looking for a more relaxed alternative to the larger resorts.

Vålådalen
Vålådalen is famous for its world-class cross-country skiing and its beautiful nature reserve. The area is perfect for both prepared trails and longer ski touring adventures in the mountains. With its peaceful setting and excellent facilities, Vålådalen is a favourite destination for winter sports enthusiasts.

Åre
Åre is Scandinavia’s largest ski resort and offers everything from challenging alpine skiing to cross-country trails and winter activities. The lively village has a wide selection of restaurants, cafés and events throughout the winter season. Whether you are looking for world-class skiing or a vibrant mountain atmosphere, Åre has something for everyone.

Storulvån
Storulvån is a well-known starting point for ski touring in the Jämtland mountains. In winter it serves as the gateway to the famous Jämtland Triangle route between Storulvån, Sylarna and Blåhammaren. The area offers spectacular mountain scenery and unforgettable winter adventures.

Storlien
Storlien is a historic mountain resort close to the Norwegian border. It offers both alpine skiing and cross-country trails, as well as access to the open mountain landscape for touring. With its railway station located in the village centre, Storlien is one of the most accessible ski destinations in the region.

Destinations in Härjedalen

Vemdalen
Vemdalen is one of Sweden’s most popular ski destinations, with several ski areas including Björnrike, Vemdalsskalet and Klövsjö/Storhogna. The resort offers excellent alpine skiing, well-prepared cross-country trails and beautiful mountain scenery. It is especially popular with families and winter holidaymakers.

Ramundberget
Ramundberget is known for its genuine mountain atmosphere and excellent skiing. The area offers both alpine slopes and a large network of cross-country and ski touring trails. From here you can easily reach the open mountain plateau for longer winter adventures.

Funäsfjällen
Funäsfjällen is one of Sweden’s largest ski areas, with several resorts connected by a vast network of trails. The area offers outstanding cross-country skiing, alpine slopes and extensive terrain for ski touring. Its wide mountain landscapes and traditional villages make it a favourite for winter travellers.

Bruksvallarna
Bruksvallarna is one of Sweden’s best-known destinations for cross-country skiing. The village is surrounded by hundreds of kilometres of groomed trails and easy access to ski touring routes in the mountains. With its peaceful setting and strong skiing tradition, it attracts both recreational skiers and elite athletes.

How do I book a train journey to the mountains?

Book a train journey or a train journey with a connecting transfer via our online booking system, which you can find at the top of this page or on the homepage. In the booking system you can see current departures, times and prices.

Once you have made a search, yellow highlighted dates in the booking calendar show which days we operate services to your destination.

How do I book a bus or taxi transfer?

Search for your journey all the way to your final destination in our online booking system and the transfer will automatically be booked together with your train ticket.

How does the bus or taxi transfer work?

The transfer connects with the train and departs via the following stations:

  • Undersåker: Transfer to Vålådalen, Trillevallen and Edsåsdalen.
  • Åre: Transfer to Åre Björnen.
  • Enafors: Transfer to Storulvån.
  • Röjan or Östersund: Transfer to Björnrike, Vemdalsskalet and Klövsjö/Storhogna, as well as to Funäsdalen, Bruksvallarna and Ramundberget.

How does travelling by overnight train to the mountains work?

Boarding Snälltåget’s overnight train is the start of your mountain adventure. You can choose between several different comfort levels depending on how you would like to travel.

Seat
A seat in an open carriage or compartment.

First Class Seat
A wider and more comfortable armchair. A pillow, blanket and sheet are included.

Berth in a shared compartment
You share a compartment with other travellers (up to six people). The compartment is converted from seating to sleeping berths for the night.

Private compartment
A private compartment for you and your party (up to six people). The compartment is converted to sleeping berths and bed linen is provided.

Is there a restaurant carriage on the night train?

Yes. Our night trains have a restaurant carriage called Krogen, where you can buy meals, drinks and snacks during the journey.

The restaurant carriage is popular, so we offer table reservations.

You can also start your day with breakfast in the restaurant carriage or take a breakfast bag back to your compartment.

Can I pre-book breakfast?

Yes, you can pre-book breakfast when purchasing your ticket or add it afterwards.

Pre-booking helps us plan better and reduces food waste.

Breakfast costs SEK 99 when pre-booked (SEK 109 on board). Vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options are available.

Can I bring a dog or other pets?

Yes, you can travel with pets in the Seat category and in a Private compartment.

How does luggage and ski equipment work on the train?

You may bring two pieces of hand luggage (maximum 55 × 45 × 25 cm) and one small personal item, such as a handbag.

Passengers travelling to Östersund, Undersåker, Åre, Duved and Storlien can also use the luggage carriage to check in larger items such as skis, sledges or pushchairs. Luggage check-in can be added when booking or afterwards.

Can I change or cancel my journey?

Tickets can normally be changed or cancelled up to 24 hours before departure (or 7 days for private compartments on night trains).

Refundable tickets are also available for an additional fee.
