Seven tips for your trip to the Øresund region

With short distances between cities, attractions and places of interest, the Øresund region is ideal if you want to experience several destinations during the same trip. Here, we have gathered some suggestions for places to visit and excursions around the Sound.

1. Discover Copenhagen

Copenhagen combines city life with easy access to the waterfront, parks and cycle-friendly neighbourhoods. Stroll along Nyhavn, visit Tivoli Gardens, see the Crown Jewels at Rosenborg Castle or enjoy the views from the Round Tower in the heart of the city's historic centre.

The city is also known for its diverse districts, each with its own distinct character. Vesterbro offers restaurants, cafés and independent shops, Nørrebro is home to street food, vintage stores and creative urban spaces, while Østerbro is known for its wide boulevards, green parks and more relaxed atmosphere.

Copenhagen is also one of the leading culinary destinations in the Nordic region, offering everything from traditional smørrebrød and artisan bakeries to modern restaurants and street food markets such as Reffen by the harbour. Many visitors also choose to explore the city by bicycle or on a boat tour through the canals and harbour.

2. Visit Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Located in Humlebæk on the Øresund coast, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is one of the best-known art museums in the Nordic region. The museum is renowned for its seaside setting, where modern art, sculpture and Danish architecture meet nature, coastal paths and views across the Sound.

Louisiana houses one of Scandinavia's largest collections of modern and contemporary art, featuring works from the 1940s to the present day. Alongside internationally acclaimed artists, the museum presents temporary exhibitions focusing on art, design and architecture. Outside the museum buildings, the experience continues in the sculpture park, where open lawns, wooded areas and artworks are scattered along the slopes leading down to the sea.

The site also includes a café, a design shop specialising in Scandinavian products and activities for both children and adults throughout the year. Louisiana is easily reached by train from Copenhagen and makes an excellent day trip along Denmark's Øresund coastline.

3. Stroll through Helsingør and visit Kronborg Castle

On the Danish side of the Øresund lies Helsingør, a historic trading town with cobbled streets, a harbour, cafés and views across the water towards Sweden. Wander through the town centre, relax by the harbour or continue to Kulturhavn Kronborg, where several of the town's major attractions are located.

Kronborg Castle is Helsingør's most famous landmark and one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. Known as Hamlet's Castle from Shakespeare's famous play, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore grand halls, tapestries, casemates and fortifications that tell the story of the era when the Sound Dues made Helsingør a key trading centre.

Nearby, you will also find M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, an award-winning museum built within a former dry dock, featuring exhibitions on Denmark's maritime history. The ferry crossing from Helsingborg takes around 20 minutes, and Helsingør is also well connected by rail along the Danish coast.

4. Experience Helsingborg and Sofiero

In Helsingborg, city life, the sea and scenic excursions along the Øresund are always close at hand. Walk along the waterfront promenade, enjoy a coffee in the city centre or climb Kärnan, the medieval watchtower that has overlooked the city for nearly 700 years. From the top, you can enjoy sweeping views across Helsingborg, the Sound and Denmark.

Just north of the city lies Sofiero Palace and Gardens, featuring landscaped parks, ravines and sea views. Sofiero hosts concerts, exhibitions and garden events throughout the season. The gardens are particularly famous for their rhododendrons, which bloom in May and June, but visitors can also enjoy flower displays, kitchen gardens, greenhouses and winding pathways for much of the year.

5. Explore Landskrona and Ven

Landskrona is an excellent destination if you wish to combine small-town charm, coastal scenery and excursions around the Øresund region. The town offers waterfront promenades, a marina, restaurants and Landskrona Citadel, one of the best-preserved 16th-century fortresses in the Nordic region. Around the citadel, you will find moats, parks and Sweden's oldest allotment garden area.

From Landskrona, ferries reach the island of Ven in approximately 30 minutes. The island is known for its cycling routes, coastal landscapes and panoramic views of both Sweden and Denmark. Hire a bicycle for the day and stop at farm shops, cafés, beaches and the Tycho Brahe Museum, dedicated to the world-famous astronomer who lived on the island during the 16th century.

6. Enjoy seaside Malmö

The sea is never far away in Malmö. Walk along the quays of the Western Harbour, admire Turning Torso rising above the skyline or enjoy a stroll at Ribersborg Beach with views across the Øresund. Ribersborg is also home to naturum Øresund, where aquariums, interactive exhibitions and activities for all ages provide an insight into the marine life beneath the surface of the Sound.

In the city centre, areas such as Lilla Torg, Gamla Väster and Möllevången offer restaurants, cafés, independent shops and an international food scene. Malmö is particularly well known for its many falafel restaurants, while Malmö Saluhall brings together local food experiences in a former warehouse beside the canals. Those interested in culture will find Malmö Castle, Moderna Museet Malmö and Malmö Konsthall all within easy reach of the city centre.

Malmö also makes an excellent base for exploring the wider Øresund region. From here, you can easily continue to Copenhagen, Helsingborg and other destinations across Skåne by train and public transport.
